Update: The book is now available! Get it here!
It was June 5th 2017 and Apple just unveiled ARKit for iOS at WWDC 2017. I would not lie if I say that I was surprised because I was expecting an augmented reality framework for last couple of years, specially when Apple acquired Metaio.
Later that night I sat in my crappy motel and downloaded Xcode 9 beta and iOS 11 beta on insanely slow wifi. Let me talk a little bit about the motel. There maybe times when you are driving on the highway and you see motels right on the highway and you think, who the hell would stay in that. Well that was the same hotel I stayed in.
Anyways, several hours later around 2:00 AM in the morning I was able to run my first ARKit application on my iPhone 6S. I was filled with joy. There was a spaceship in my room and I could look at the spaceship from different directions. I loved it! :)
I spend the next few days experimenting with ARKit and loved the whole framework and the experience it provides. As an educator and instructor I started working on an ARKit course on Udemy. I am proud to say that my course became an instant hit and is one of the best selling courses on Udemy. You can check out the course here.
Now, that the initial version of the course is completed I can focus on the book. I have decided to self publish the book on Gumroad. This is going to give me the flexibility to provide updates to the book faster.
I will be following the lean publishing model, which will allow me to release one or more chapter a week. The first chapter will be available next week.
Here is the rough outline of the book (Keep in mind this may change):
- Hello ARKit
- Geometry, materials and nodes
- Loading models
- Detecting planes
- Physics and collision detection
- Physical based rendering
The great news is that you can preorder the book right now :) Use the following link to preorder.
